New Roof/Stadium In Regina Now In Serious Doubt
« on: February 26, 2011, 01:58:30 PM »
Apparently the provincial government is going to drop the project if they don't get indication of federal assistance by Monday.

That's a tough break, but stuff happens. I hope we turn it around because I wouldn't mind the retractable-roof facility being built. The Riders are determined to find a way to build this thing.

Renovating Taylor Field is an option, but not a good one because it would essentially have to be rebuilt, especially the east side.

I guess we'll see.

Maybe there is a bit of ironic justice to that. Over on RF.com where mocking of anything not green and white is the norm there was considerable ridiculing of the ongoing Hamilton stadium issue and prior to that Winnipeg was the target. Sounds like the stadium circus train is heading west.

I wonder if this is not a certain amount of posturing by Premier Wall to try and coax some answers out of the Federal government.  It would seem a bit of a long shot to get those answers in the shorter term, with the possibility of this being made into an election issue.  It may well play in Saskatchewan, but I would suggest that the Liberals, NDP and Bloc would get no shortage of mileage about it, either if it did spread to funding other arena projects and perhaps more so if it didn't (read Quebec City).

I think it's quite reasonable to expect some degree of support by all three levels of government, as has been the case in Wpg and Ham, but I haven't looked specifically at what kind of support they're seeking.  I just think the timing of this sort of demand is rather poor given that we're just coming out of a recession with relatively fragile economy, and there is a minority government that needs to govern as if there is an imminent election.
