Surprising last minute OL retirements; Chiu, Newman.
« on: June 06, 2010, 11:23:38 AM »
The Stamps suddenly find themselves having to totally retool their OL with Pilon and Newman retiring and Tsoumpas kicking the NFL tires. From what was an outstanding 2008 draft with the one-two combo of Newman and Tsoumpas the Stamps now have nothing to show for their #2 & #3 overall picks.

Chiu's retirement I find a bit surprising in some ways, but not in others. For accomplished players such as Chiu they often seriously consider themselves as having played their last game as a season ends only to find the fire in the belly starting to stoke up as the next season nears. Other teams they leave that season expecting to return but come TC that same fire they expect to come back just isn't there any more.

I don't have any specific knowledge of either case, but would bet my last dollar that the Als have known about the Chui decision for at least a month and would've been kept in the loop all through the off-season.  Surprising for us, but not likely for the organization.  The timing may very well have more to do with them getting their GC rings and him wanting to be a part of the team through that and gather with them to tell them in person.  The guy loves that organization and wouldn't pull this out of thin air.

The Newman one was possibly more of a surprise given his age.  The Stamps haven't exactly been overly active in going out and trading for established CFL veteran O-linemen (not named Comiskey) this off-season.

I was more surprised by a few of the retirements that didn't happen... such as O'Day and Makowski, and the return of Dan Comiskey at age 38.
