New NFL deal might help the CFL

"On the bright side, there are some things that are agreed upon. Both sides want to see some form of cap on rookie spending and more money diverted back to veterans and retired players. The union's model would make players free agents after three years in the league, limit rookie spending and put $200 million back into the player pool for established players. "There's an agreement in principle (between the NFL and NFLPA) that rookies are paid too much," the league official said. So at least there is that common ground."

It seems logical to me that if the money being thrown at CFL free agents to come to the NFL is lower it would make the CFL a more attractive option. As it is there are players in the CFL who turn down NFL contracts to return to the CFL when they are not offered good signing bonuses ect. I'm all for things that will decrease the number of CFL players that go down to the NFL just to get cut.

I don't think that will change anything when it comes CFL players going south. Where things are way out of whack is with the high first round draft picks who enter the league earning 20, 30 and 40 million dollars in guaranteed money before they attend their first practice. There is no issue with the entry level rookie free agent signings who are coming in at or near minimum wage of $300,000 with marginal bonus money. It gotten to the point in the NFL where teams would rather not have a pick in the top 4. I've been listening to quite a bit of NFL talk show radio leading up to the draft where fans have called in pondering if their team should trade down. Consensus is that few teams would be able to find trading partners because of the guaranteed money that comes with those top picks. Why trade up to get the top DL if you can stay where you are and take the 2nd or 3rd rated player at that position and save yourself $10million?
